On Repeat: of Montreal "Gallery Piece"

utterli-image
"Gallery Piece", from of Montreal's new album Skeletal Lamping is on serious repeat as of late, last evening I was on the verge of begging friends to come over in the am and operate the 'strobe light effect' in my apartment (turning the light switch on/off/on ad infinitum) while I danced to it.

Here are the lyrics to "Gallery Piece":

I wanna be your love

I wanna make you cry

And sweep you off your feet

I wanna hurt your pride

I wanna slap your face

I wanna paint your nails

I wanna make you you scream

I wanna braid your hair

I wanna kiss your friends

I wanna make you laugh

I wanna dress the same

I wanna defend you

I wanna squeeze your thighs

I wanna kiss your eyelids

And corrupt your dreams

I wanna crash your car

I wanna scratch your cheeks

I wanna make you sick

I wanna sell you out

Want to expose your flaws

I wanna steal your things

I wanna show you off

I wanna tell you lies

I wanna write you books

I wanna turn you on

I wanna make you cum

Two-hundred times a day

I wanna dry tears

Every time your sad

I wanna be your what's happening

I wanna be your only friend

I only go all the way

This time I'm not pretending

I can't take the trash

Your trashy friends are spreading about us

They've got like fifty personalities

Oh girl, that's so messed up

You see that sculpture on the hill?

That's where she cleared me out

Forever

They're monitoring my sub-conscious massacres I know

Bringing it closer to the surface so it's easily pervertable

I want to be a beast

I want to make you proud

And play with your head

I want to take you out

Make you feel adored

And buy you everything

I want to hurt you bad

Make you paranoid

And say the sweetest things

I want to help you grow

And for eternity

I want to be your what's happening

What's happening?

The singer for Portland's the Dead Trees http://www.myspace.com/…edeadtrees reminds me a bit of Stephen Malkmus (formerly of Pavement), which is never a bad thing, and they're managed by Ryan Gentles (Wiz Kid) who was the booking agent at the Mercury Lounge http://www.mercuryloungenyc.com/ when he booked these five handsome friends known as The Strokes http://www.thestrokes.com/, then went on to manage the band (and still does - for more info on him/Wiz Kid, read this article: http://tinyurl.com/…erstrokes).

"Ice Cream Truck" Lyrics:

carol come outside

wanna gonna go for a ride

we got an ice cream truck

& fireworks to light

with the music up

loud as we can stand it

roman candles in a vacant lot

we'll feel like bandits

in a stolen ice cream truck

on the wrong side of town

sparklers out all the windows

under shrill familiar sounds

hazel stole some beer

you work the breaks i'll steer

over fences and lawns

we'll drive around til the gas runs out

on look out for the cops

binoculars made out of push up pops

all the missiles are melting

we'll give them away

anna stole an ice cream truck

on the wrong side of town

high on stolen pills from her sister's treatment

i think it's gonna be pretty bad when we come down

Some Quick Advice: It Helps To Stay Positive

utterli-image
You're going to want to go ahead and trust me on this one, folks, why??

cuz most kids give me credit

for being down with it

when I was back in the day

back when things were way different

when the youth of today and the early seven seconds

taught me some of life's most valuable lessons

there's gonna come a time when the scene'll seem less sunny

it'll probably get druggy and the kids'll seem to skinny

there's gonna come a time when shes gonna have to go

with whoevers gonna get her the highest

there's gonna come a time when the true scene leaders

forget where they differ and get big picture

cause the kids at their shows, they'll have kids of their own

the sing-a-long songs'll be our scriptures

we gotta stay positive

we gotta stay positive

we gotta stay positive

we gotta stay positive

Juana Molina New MP3 "Un Dia" & Tour Dates

utterli-image
You can download this track for free (I'm seeing this more and more with singles & EPs) by signing up for her newsletter here: http://www.juanamolina.com/…rdownload/

About the new Juana Molina album:

Un Día, the fifth release from Argentinean artist Juana Molina is a brave departure from her previous work. It is every bit a Juana record, personal and intimate as always, but with pronounced rhythms and bold low end added to the mix. The album was recorded entirely by Juana (with the sole addition of guitar by Gareth Dickson from Vashti Bunyan’s band) at her home outside Buenos Aires. It is a hypnotic record, restless, alive with melodies that surface imperceptibly before burrowing into your brain, never to leave. The tracks are informed by an ever shifting and polymorphous sense of groove. The rhythm writhing over and inside each other, played out on wood and cymbal and bombo legüero, and woven from electronic glitches.

For the uninitiated, Juana Molina grew up in Argentina and was exiled to Paris with her family at the age of 12. Her father is THE coolest of cool old school Tango singers and her mother, an actress. Juana herself spent many years as a comedic TV star in South America, but made a complete break with acting at the height of her fame to return to music (a move that, which must be noted, was met with nothing short of hostility back home). Since releasing her first album, Juana has won praise from all corners and a loyal fanbase, counting among her fans and supports the likes of José Gonzalez, David Byrne and Leslie Feist (all of whom she has toured with).

Juana Molina is out on tour:

07 Komedia Theatre, Brighton, UK

08 The Ruby Lounge, Manchester, UK

Hezekiah Jones "Mississippi Sea"

utterli-image
Hezekiah Jones Site: http://www.hezekiahjones.com/

Hezekiah Jones Press:

...His is a folk that has contemporary equals in artists like M. Ward, Iron & Wine, and Will Oldham. "Nothing`s Bound", though, is a waltz-y acoustic folk number that has the subtle flavor of Ray Davies and Paul Simon in its delivery. Moody, sparse and dark just below candlelight, Cutrufello`s songs are somewhat quirky only so in subtle ways, and mostly in the lyrics. Although there is nothing subtle about the slide whistle that accompanies the jaunty piano number "Writing Letters In The Morning". This is not your average musical poetry. - Robinson, Miles Of Music

Philadelphia based Hezekiah Jones, weaves his musical quilt out of the same soft, acoustic cloth most recently and elegantly spun by the likes of Sam Beam and Will Oldham. While warm and inviting, Hezekiah pokes and stirs up darker lyrical truths adding a textual spoonful of sugar to make his unique brand of medicine go down. - Aquarium Drunkard

Raphael Cutrufello's tender first outing as Hezekiah Jones sounds like a moody old folk 33 that's been made aware of today's lo-fi scene but opts out of the irony. The immediate--and correct--comparison is to Leonard Cohen, who played ancient world-weariness as both timeless and modern. - C|Net, Editor's Pick

It’s full of the kind of songs that scintillate along the glistening strands of forlorn love or something like it. Like Will Oldham, who Cutrufello cites as a major influence, the best songs are little elusive, offering tiny bubbling epiphanies and a bittersweet afterglow. - Tara Murtha, Play Philly

What is it about a solitary guitar and one singer's voice that can so easily conjure up a vivid feeling, tangible and moving? Or at least it can when the singer/songwriter in question has a true knack for such things, as Raphael Cutrufello, singer/songwriter for Hezekiah Jones clearly does. "Agnes of the World," the first song on Hezekiah Says You're A-OK is one such solitary jewel, his singing and playing immediately time-stopping. At first his lyrics seem oblique, but then it hits that he's pondering where someone from his past ended up: Agnes of the world / where have you landed?" Other songs throughout the album are even more delicate and lovely-sounding, while just as good at containing a particular emotion, scene, or story….and doing so in a not-so-ordinary way, more subtle and less simplistic than many of his peers. "Albert Hash" tells a common tale (working man turns to drink due to life's hardness) in an uncommon way, almost resembling a bedtime story in some way. "Postpone" is a beautiful folk ode to a departed lover. "Nothing's Bound" matches that same description, actually, though it has its own distinct feeling about it. Which is the general charm of this album, I suppose, that every song makes its mark on you, in its own way, even as they all hang together stylistically under one enchanting mood. Every time I listen another lyric stands out for the first time, yet every time I listen Cutrufello's voice and the overall atmosphere – sad yet sweet – is also instantly comforting. – Dave Heaton, Erasing Clouds

...brings to mind artists like Sam Beam, Paul Simon, and Will Oldham. The aren't just songs. They are musical settings and emotions. It's not too often an acoustic album can grab your attention on one listen, and this does just that. - Herohill

...a real testament to the beauty of subtlety. Featuring little more than strummed acoustic guitar and vocals throughout (augmented only momentarily by improvised percussion and piano) it’s hardly complex stuff – brilliantly understated, gentle and observant, and thankfully uncluttered by self-consciousness and misplaced optimism. - Music-News.com

...an intimate and slightly unsettling performance. The songs sound like they were written during a hot and sticky summer, they have such an unhurried quality, but there is the sort of edginess that you might expect from a man on the brink. The highpoints are “Albert Hash” and “Circumstance”, both of which sound like a more cheerful Elliott Smith. Hezekiah Says You’re A-OK gives off the warm glow of a smile, but you suspect that behind the smile all is not well in

Mr. Jones’ house. - PopMatters
